Born in 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, Jencka began composing music as a teenager, then studied composition for several years with American composer Stanley Hollingsworth. Jencka is also a performing artist and studied harpsichord with historical keyboard player Penelope Crawford, and Renaissance and Baroque performance practice with musician and scholar Lyle Nordstrom.
