Bruno Vlahek

Young Croatian pianist and composer Bruno Vlahek was born in Zagreb on 11th February 1986, where he finished (summa cum laude) the Classical Gymnasium and, graduated from the Music Academy of the University in Zagreb, from the class of Prof. Vladimir Krpan. He was enrolled to the University at the age of 15, after only six years of music education, having a status of «specially gifted student». From academic year 2005/2006, he is a post-graduation student at the Conservatoire de Lausanne (Switzerland) in the class of Prof. Jean-François Antonioli as a federal scholarship holder of Swiss Confederation. He also attended masterclasses and worked with teachers such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Peter Eicher, Noel Flores, Einar Steen-Nökleberg and Jean-Bernard Pommier.

As a pianist, he is a double absolute winner at the Croatian State Competitions in Dubrovnik (1999 and 2001) and recipient of highest awards on international competitions in Croatia and abroad. In 2005, he won an award given by the Croatian Composers Society, Rector's Award of the University in Zagreb, Prix Paderewski in 2006 (Switzerland) and many others. He performed solo recitals and with orchestras (Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Croatian Radio Television, Orchestre du Conservatoire de Lausanne, Sinfonietta de Genève...) in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, Norway, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

From 2004, he is also building a successful career as a composer. He has written 30 works of various genres, from orchestral, vocal, solo-instrumental to contemporary church music, with special emphasis on piano and chamber music. His works are mainly based on neoclassical expression and form, often combined with idiom of jazz and popular music. In 2007, his Sonata for two pianos won the Award of Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. His music gained most positive critics in Croatia and abroad, being performed in European music centres such as Salzburg, München, Vienna, Lausanne, Prague, Zagreb and other cities in Croatia, Czech Republic, Lithuania and Russia.
