Bernard Kirkpatrick received his early music training in Tasmania and from this early age pursued his interest in church music.

In 1984 he arrived in Sydney and commenced organ studies with Sydney City Organist, Robert Ampt. Bernard was joint winner of the Inaugural Sydney Organ Competition and outright winner in 1990. During 1991 he undertook tuition with M. Naji Hakim at Sacre-Coeur in Paris, specialising in improvisation.

In 1992 he completed the Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Sydney. During this time he was the University Organ Scholar and Director of Chapel Music at St. John?s College. Bernard has performed regularly for radio and played recitals at the Melbourne International Festival of Organ and Harpsichord, the Sydney Town Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

From 1988-99 Bernard held the post of Assistant Organist at St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. He established and directed the St. Mary's Singers at the Cathedral and directed the cathedral choir on occasion. In 1995 he was appointed Director of Music at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Paddington, where he established a large SATB choir to sing regularly on Sundays and feasts, performing a wide range of sacred music , from plainchant and polyphony to classical orchestral masses and contemporary works, in liturgical context. In 2004 Bernard was appointed as a Music Consultant to the National Liturgical Commission of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference.

Bernard has just taken up the appointment as Director of Music at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta, Sydney, where he is enjoying the newly refurbished and magnificent 1898 Norman & Beard Organ formerly in St. Saviours Church, Knightsbrige London.St.Patrick's Cathedral Organ He now combines this position with his appointment as part-time Music Director at the Roman Catholic Seminary of the Good Shepherd in the Archdiocese of Sydney.
