Welcome to the Andrew Moore homepage.
Andrew Moore is a composer, arranger and music editor and also a catholic priest.
Andrew Moore was born in Hayes, Greater London in 1954. At the Royal Academy of Music in London he studied violin and organ and also took the advanced orchestral conducting course. On leaving the Academy he entered the Benedictine community at Downside Abbey where he was ordained priest in 1982 having obtained degree in theology at Cambridge University (Christ’s College). At Downside he taught music and religious studies and held a number of posts including Housemaster and Bursar. He was also monastic and school choirmaster for many years. For two years he was parish priest at the Downside Parish of Little Malvern, the church where Elgar lies buried. In 1996 he stepped aside from monastic life for a more active ministry in the Diocese of Portsmouth.
Although he is perhaps best known as a composer of liturgical music, having written several widely-used mass settings , many responsorial psalms, motets, anthems and carols and been heavily involved in the compilation and editing of several hymn books, he has also made many and various arrangements of classical pieces and compiled, arranged and edited collections of instrumental music ranging from Schubert to Scott Joplin. An extensive catalogue of published works may be found at Kevin Mayhew Publishers - please see the links below for Kevin Mayhew (UK) and for Mayhewbrodt (USA).
There are many influences at work in Andrew Moore’s compositions. ‘English Pastoral’ may be applied to many pieces and he makes much use of modal music (the plainsong influence) but there are also elements of jazz harmonies (his father was a very accomplished jazz pianist). His extensive and intimate knowledge of the broadest range of classical music from Schutz to Shostakovitch also tells.
In addition to the traditionally published works mentioned above, a wide range of other works is now available online through the Andrew Moore Music store at Sibeliusmusic.com. These works include songs, chamber music and instrumental music as well as a completely new set of responsorial psalms and further liturgical music. Newly-set versions of traditional classical pieces and new arrangements are also available through this store. Please follow the links below. The catalogue at the Andrew Moore Music store is easier to navigate than the list of works given on this page and new scores are added regularly.
