Douglas Brooks-Davies

Lives in Cheshire, United Kingdom

Born in Wimbledon, South London, in 1942. Educated Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, Brasenose College, Oxford, and the University of Liverpool (PhD, 1967). Lecturer in English Literature, University of Leeds, 1967-70; Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in English Literature, Victoria University of Manchester, 1970-1993. Subsequently a freelance author/editor and composer. Married to Mary Brooks-Davies. Four children: Emily, Grace, Robin, and Harriet.

Music: play recorders, viola and flute. In order to devote time to the latter, and utterly inspired by a life-long love of William Bennett's playing, I have finally given up playing the oboe.Formerly sang counter-tenor in church choir.

Compositions, etc: include religious choral works, secular instrumental works for strings, flute and oboe, and many arrangements for different combinations including wind quintet. I was taught privately by, among others, the late Professors Peter Latham and Sir Jack Westrup. Editions of S.S.Wesley's 12 Anthems (1853),together with services and other works from his The European Psalmist (1872), anthems by Maurice Greene, William Boyce, and J. Clarke Whitfeld, also edited from their first editions, will be found under the respective composer names on the CPDL website.
